The 2004 d.u.m.b.o. dance festival situates itself as an integral part of the broader d.u.m.b.o. art under the bridge festival, produced by the d.u.m.b.o. arts center (dac). Both indoor and outdoor artwork and performances will take place throughout the weekend of this not-to-be-missed celebration.  The grand scale of the festival, the diverse artist participation, cutting-edge dance and vast interdisciplinary variety distinguishes the event among its peers. This year's d.u.m.b.o. art under the bridge festival is anticipated to be the largest, most comprehensive gathering to date. For three days, over 250,000 people are expected to attend New York’s liveliest fine arts festival, held in the streets, along the Brooklyn waterfront and in the myriad galleries, studios and performance spaces in the DUMBO area. Approximately 1,500 established and emerging artists will participate in this year's event, spanning 30 blocks between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges - making it the nation's largest free contemporary visual arts festival. Art happens everywhere - on walls, streets and river, in parks, lobbies and galleries. Mixed media installations, nighttime projections, performances and exhibitions take place as artists work within and around the unique spaces of this historic, once-industrial neighborhood.

History – WHITE WAVE Performance & Rehearsal Space:

The dumbo arts center (dac) again welcomes Young Soon Kim and WHITE WAVE as hosts of the fourth annual d.u.m.b.o. dance festival. From the ever-evolving, state-of-the-art 4,000 sq. ft. studio-stage located at 25 Jay Street, WHITE WAVE is proud to present another exciting series of performances which features a wide range of artists – from newly rising choreographers to more established dance companies, on shared programs. WHITE WAVE, a performance, rehearsal and teaching hub, is located on the Brooklyn waterfront amidst a rapidly growing arts community. The former factory boasts red oak floors, exposed brick walls, 15-foot high ceilings, and natural wood finish. The mission of WHITE WAVE/Young Soon Kim Dance Company, a 10-member company formed in 1988 is to broaden the boundaries of dance. Its vision is expansive, challenging the threshold of the medium, surging forward to create new possibilities and providing an invaluable artist resource center in one of Brooklyn’s hippest and fastest growing neighborhoods.

Young Soon Kim, Artistic Director of WHITE WAVE/Young Soon Kim Dance Company and Curator for the annual d.u.m.b.o. dance festival and Cool New York DANCE Festival, received a BFA in dance from Ewha University in Seoul, Korea and came to the United States in 1977. Ms. Kim danced with Jennifer Muller/The Works and was the Co-Artistic Director of Throne Dance Theater, among many other companies in New York City. Since its creation in 1988, WHITE WAVE has appeared on principal stages both in the US and Far East including the 1988 Summer Olympics World Dance Festival. During her 27-year choreographic career, Kim has created more than 40 works. In addition to works for her company, she has choreographed for the Throne Dance Theater, City Contemporary Dance Company in Hong Kong., Seoul Contemporary Dance Co. and the St. Gallen Dance Loft in Switzerland and has conducted classes and workshops worldwide. In October 2003 Young Soon Kim and her company performed at The 6th Seoul International Dance Festival at the Seoul Arts Center, in Korea. In July 2004 the company appeared at the Dog Days’04 Dance Festival at the historic Hubbard Hall, Cambridge, NY. Ms. Kim was chosen as an achievement artist for a documentary film “Arirang; A Celebration of Korean Centennial”, directed by Tom Coffman. This film “Arirang” premiered on May 3, 2003 at the Smithsonian in Washington DC and also aired on Channel 13 on May 10, 2004.
