Immediately following the fifth annual d.u.m.b.o. dance festival, WHITE WAVE will launch the first annual
International DUMBO Dance Festival, October 19-23, 2005. The goal of this festival is to showcase the works of emerging contemporary dance choreographers of a single ethnic or cultural heritage. Curated by Young Soon Kim, Artistic Director of WHITE WAVE, in association with The Korea Society, the inaugural festival will focus on Korean dance makers who are active not only in Korea, but worldwide. It will feature the work of 7 choreographers and 22 dancers performing two different programs.
This year's festival roster is rich with internationally acclaimed Korean rising stars, and will feature:
JUNG Young-Doo / DOO Dance Theatre (Korea)
The critics said about Mr. Jung: " "Focused and a Touch of Humanity". Dancers can become either Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde, depending upon the situation. In one body, these two aspects try to be separated, compromise with each other and unite together. The piece is about the endless uneasiness between rationality and irrationality. Set to Bolero by Maurice Ravel, it is danced by Jung Young-Doo, Kim Nam-geon, Kwak Go-Eun. Jung Young-Doo's work has been seen at Seoul International Dance Festival's "Contemporary Korean Dances by Young Artists" as well as in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. Awards include the Yokohama Dance Collection Prizewinner 2004 and DANCE FESTIVAL FOR THE CRITICS CHOICE OF ARTISTS 2005(Seoul, Korea)
LEE Tae-Sang (Korea)
An underground mining tunnel has collapsed. Geothermal heat is building. Breathing is difficult. Only a few light bulbs are on. This is the world of Gaksokdo. The piece features film by Lee Soo-Won, lighting by Shin Ho and photographs by Park Sang-Yoon. It is danced by In Jung-Ju, Lee Kyung-Joon, Byeon So-Yeon, and Lee Tae-Sang. Lee Tae-Sang is a graduate of Joong Ang University. He was awarded as the Best Choreographer at the 2005 Dance Festival for the Critics' Choice of Young Artists. His work has been seen at ImPulsTanz in Austria and Düsseldorf Tanzhaus in Germany. He has also collaborated on works with Akram Khan and Jeremy Nelson. He taught at Sangmyung University, Pusan University, Chung-Ang University, and Jeonbook University.
LEE Kyungeun / leek.dance (Korea)
"Between" is a collaborative work with Saito Eiji and was performed at 2004 Korea/Japan Dance Contact. It is a study on the process of narrowing of the gap in human relationships. Ms. Lee was the winner of the choreography contest of The 8th International Solo-Tanz-Theater Festival, Stuttgart and toured 5 major cities with the work. Her choreography received 2nd place at the Grand Atelier Chorégraphes-Compositeurs at the Royaumont Foundation.
(Paris). Lee is a graduate of Hanyang University. Her work has been seen in Tokyo, France (Montpellier Danse Festival) and Germany (Solo-Tanz-Theater Festival). She was awarded the Best Choreographer at the 2003 Dance Festival for the Critics' Choice of Young Artists.
KIM Yun-Jung / YJK Dance (Germany)
Based in Düsseldorf, Germany, Yun Jung Kim believes that the emotional content of the work is the main source for creation; without a deeper inner impulse, there is no necessity to create. This idea is an important source for her choreographic work, leading to a vital movement vocabulary, full with physical and emotional layers. Yun Jung Kim graduated from the Su-Won University and Ewha Women's University in Seoul, Korea. In 1994 she came to Europe to study at the European Dance Development Center (EDDC) in The Netherlands. She has presented work throughout Europe as well as in Korea. As a dancer she worked in Korea with the Wang Mi Sook Dance Company and the Yang Jung Contemporary Dance Company, in Europe with Mary Fulkerson, Joao da Silva Jr., Charlotte Zerbey, Marcus Grolle and with the Russian choreographer Olga Pona.
CHA Jin-Yeob (England)
In 2001, Jin-Yeob Cha co-founded Laboratory Dance Project (LDP). Ms. Cha worked as both a dancer and a choreographer. In 2001 she also joined the EN-KNAP Dance Company in Slovenia, where she worked as a dancer with choreographer Iztok Kovac until 2002. Jin-Yeob received the best choreographer award in The Korean Choreography Festival in 2002. Cha has been invited to various dance festivals in Korea including The Korea World Dance Stars Festival, Seoul International Dance Competition, and the Seoul Dance Festival. Ms. Cha worked with Dance Energy Company in Munich, Germany and for Micha Purucker from 1999-2003. Currently, she is a member of Edge, the post graduate company of LCDS, and is also working in London with choreographer Hofesh Shechter (who worked in Batsheva Dance Company).
NAM Yung-Ho / Rascalou-Nam Dance Company(France)
The Rascalou-Nam Dance Company was founded in 1998 in Montpellier, France by co-artistic directors Young-Ho Nam and Francois Rascalou, to exchange ideas about and collaborate on two different cultures as well as Eastern and Western philosophies. The company's primary goal is to express and present nature of humanity, utilizing various cultural backgrounds. It also researches many different methodologies throughout their improvisation works with dancers as well as audiences. Since its inception, Dance Company Rascalou-Nam has performed amazing works in both domestic and international arenas.
KIM Eun-Jeong / Dance On&Off
A pair of lovers shows their reflex of the desire and despair on small yellow summer mat. Immovable space and time ties up them and get a heartsick of love, against reality and hallucination. They navigate as if the broken ship of life floats on the ocean. It's dreamy, but real.
The Dance On&Off was invited to perform at Tanz Messe in Dusseldorf, Germany supported by Korea World Dance Center and Switsland, Wintherthure Theater 2004 as well as Agora Theater in Tokyo, Japan. The company performed in Seoul Dance Festival, Choon Chun International Mime festival (2005), Experimental Performing Arts festival (2003 & 2004), Geo Chang International Theater Festival, Next Wave festival and 1st Fantasia Dancing Fair in Korea.
A full performance schedule for the festival and the program info will be announced in August.
Mission & History - WHITE WAVE Performance & Rehearsal Space:
WHITE WAVE is a performance, rehearsal and teaching hub boasting red oak floors, exposed brick walls, 15-foot high ceilings, and natural wood finish. The mission of WHITE WAVE/Young Soon Kim Dance Company, a 10-member company formed in 1988 is to broaden the boundaries of dance. Its vision is expansive, challenging the threshold of the medium, surging forward to create new possibilities and providing an invaluable artist resource center in one of Brooklyn's fastest growing artist neighborhoods.
WHITE WAVE's mission is to act as a potent stimulus for change and expansion of the dance / arts world. We do this through the creation of new dance works, production of dance concerts, and education and outreach through dance classes. WHITE WAVE accomplishes this by creating a platform for emerging and established artists to perform their work, by providing a much-needed space where those artists can rehearse and congregate, and by engaging the local dance community in an ongoing arts dialogue, carrying dance and art forward through the spirit of sharing.
This year, WHITE WAVE will produce three dance festivals in conjunction with larger arts programs. By broadening WHITE WAVE's reach, these festivals will create greater opportunity for audience participation and provide the community with continued access to diverse artistic voices throughout the year. The WHITE WAVE Festivals Project has three components:
2005 d.u.m.b.o. dance festival (October 13-16, 2005),
International DUMBO Dance Festival: Korea featuring Korean choreographers
and dancers who are active worldwide (October 19-23, 2005), and
Cool New York 2006 DANCE Festival (January 26- February 5, 2006)
Since 2001, the annual d.u.m.b.o. dance festival and the Cool New York DANCE Festival have been extremely successful, with over 440 participating choreographers and dance companies, over 1800 participating performers, and well over 20,000 audience members.
Young Soon Kim, Artistic Director of WHITE WAVE/Young Soon Kim Dance Company, received a BFA in dance from Ewha University in Seoul, Korea and came to the United States in 1977. Ms. Kim danced with Jennifer Muller/The Works and was the Co-Artistic Director of Throne Dance Theater, among many other companies in New York City. Since its birth in 1988, WHITE WAVE has appeared on principal stages both in the US and Far East including the 1988 Summer Olympics World Dance Festival. During her 29-year choreographic career, Kim has created more than 45 works. In addition to works for her company, she has choreographed for City Contemporary Dance Company in Hong Kong., Seoul Contemporary Dance Co., and the St. Gallen Dance Loft in Switzerland and has conducted classes and workshops worldwide. Ms. Kim was chosen as an achievement artist for a documentary film Arirang: A Celebration of Korean Centennial, directed by Tom Coffman, which premiered in May, 2003 at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC., followed by nationwide broadcast on public television.
The festivals at WHITE WAVE are sponsored by New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Brooklyn Borough President's Office, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, Samsung Electronics America, INC, LG Electronics America, Inc., The Korea Society, Korean Cultural Service, and the support of individual donors. Also, the 2005 d.u.m.b.o. dance festival is made possible in part with public funds from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. In Kings County, this program is administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council, Inc. (BAC).
The Korea Society is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated solely to the promotion of greater awareness, understanding and cooperation between the people of the United States and Korea. For more information, please visit: www.koreasociety.org
The installation of WHITE WAVE's new, fully equipped state-of-the-art lighting system is funded by a generous grant from the Mertz Gilmore Foundation.
