Mission & History: WHITE WAVE Performance & Rehearsal Space Mission
WHITE WAVE is a potent stimulus for change and expansion of the dance/arts world through the creation of new dance works, production of dance concerts, and education and outreach through dance classes.
• The Company creates dance pieces that share with audiences of all cultures a modern perspective of timeless issues through the expressive medium of contemporary dance.
• The Performance & Rehearsal Space (John Ryan Theater) provides a venue where emerging artists can congregate, create, rehearse and present new dance works. We provide the vital resource of low cost subsidized rental space, and our Festivals Project promotes and presents emerging and established choreographers and dance companies through our annual festivals
• The Dance Studio serves a wide range of dance students from the recreational to the professional.
Annual Festivals Project
The success of the Festivals Project has been astounding. Each year, WHITE WAVE produces three annual dance festivals in conjunction with larger arts and civic programs. These collaborations create greater opportunities for audience participation and provide the community with continued access to diverse artistic voices throughout the year. In October 2006, WHITE WAVE completed its resoundingly successful Sixth annual d.u.m.b.o. dance festival, showcasing 80 choreographers/dance companies and over 400 performers to overflowing houses of enthusiastic audiences. Since 2001, Festival’s Project at WHITE WAVE has been a mainstay of New York’s modern dance scene, involving 690 participating choreographers and dance companies and over 3,500 participating performers.

WHITE WAVE’s festivals are widely covered by the press.

Jennifer Dunning of the New York Times wrote
“…The ambitious festival, directed by Young Soon Kim and presented at the gleaming John Ryan Theater at the WHITE WAVE Performance and Rehearsal Space in Brooklyn, stood out for the generally high level of the choreography and performing.”
DANCE Magazine’s Carrie Stern wrote in New York Notebook,
“The sheer variety of the work by 85 New York choreographers in WHITE WAVE’s warm theater, and… Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park was exhilarating….”
Writing about WHITE WAVE’s Cool New York 2005 DANCE Festival,
Carley Petesch of The Village Voice said,
"The sampling of varied visions is eye-opening... the festival offers deserving choreographers brief but much needed exposure."

History
WHITE WAVE’s John Ryan Theater is a performance, rehearsal and teaching hub boasting red oak floors, exposed brick walls, 15-foot ceilings, and a fully equipped professional lighting system. WHITE WAVE moved from its Manhattan home to a former factory in DUMBO in 2001; the transformation of the previously industrial space into a professional theater after 11 months of renovation is still a marvel to DUMBO inhabitants. The same year, we produced the very first and hugely successful annual DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL in conjunction with the d.u.m.b.o art under the bridge festival. Since then, we have not stopped for a moment, with each year’s programming expanding in both quality and numbers.

Other recent highlights include:
• 2005: The first annual International DUMBO Dance Festival featuring stunning works by 7 rising contemporary Korean choreographers with 21 performers from Korea, England, France, Germany and Japan.

• 2006: We launched the first ever WAVE RISING SERIES, which featured an exciting mélange of featuring 14 choreographers, 69 dancers, and 17 works in 6 programs in evening length works.

• 2006 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL has been covered on ABC Channel 7 “ Eyewitnesses News” on Oct. 21.
