WHITE WAVE John Ryan Theater
WHITE WAVE presents the 11th Anniversary of the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL from September 22nd -25th at the WHITE WAVE John Ryan Theater 25 Jay Street, Brooklyn. WHITE WAVE’s Artistic Director Young Soon Kim founded the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL in 2001. Now, the Festival is recognized around the world as a prestigious gathering of young choreographers. Selected by a panel of eight eminent figures in the dance world, participating artists have the opportunity to share their artistic vision with a diverse audience including both aficionados and first-time dancegoers. The festival provides a safe haven for emerging choreographers where they can freely explore their creativity and create new cutting-edge works. Presented in conjunction with the 2011 DUMBO ARTS FESTIVAL, a multi-disciplinary celebration of the neighborhood’s diverse artistic community, the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL features exciting work from dance artists in Brooklyn’s vibrant contemporary dance scene, sharing bills with rising choreographers from throughout the United States and international artists from Canada, Italy, and Japan. There are no reservations or advance ticket sales, all seats are first come, first served and all Festival performances are presented FREE/$10 Suggested Donation.
For the second year in a row, we will present a series of site-specific works along the DUMBO waterfront. Designed to be interdisciplinary, these pieces are collaborations between choreographers, composers, live musicians, film and video artists and fashion/costume designers. Performances will take place simultaneously at four locations: Site 1: The wide shoulder/corner leading to the Pier 1 promenade; Sites 2 and 3: Two spots on the Pier 1 promenade; Site 4: The Stairs at Granite Prospect.
We also offer our annual Program for families: Sunday, Sept. 25 from 12noon-3pm at Brooklyn Bridge Park/Main St. Lot, Riverview Lawn. Celebrating the next generation of dancers… and their parents! Teachers in WHITE WAVE’S Kids Can Dance education program will lead a one hour class session of Hip Hop/B-boy and Modern Dance for kids of all ages. Following the class, twelve festival artists then take the stage for a family-friendly program of contemporary dance.
The 2011 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL comes to a close Sunday, September 25th with a GRAND FINALE performance on the scenic Fulton Ferry Landing, which overlooks Manhattan, framed by water and sky. Nine choreographers will present dance works with the dazzling New York City nighttime skyline serving as their backdrop. These renowned companies include Italy’s Marianna Giorgi/Insane Dance Company, Japan’s Maika Misumi, Pascal Rekoert/Flexicurve, The Murphy/Smith Dance Collective, Joe Celej, Arch Dance Company/Jennifer Archibald, Cari Cunningham/belle contemporary dance co., Julliard Graduate young star choreographer Julia Eichten, and WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company.
