The 2006 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVALcelebrates its sixth year of showcasing emerging and established choreographers and dance companies. Curated by Young Soon Kim, Artistic Director of WHITE WAVE, the festival runs October 19-22, 2006 at WHITE WAVE's John Ryan Theater as part of the Tenth Annual d.u.m.b.o. art under the bridge festival.

More than 80 competitively-selected choreographers and companies, representing some “jewels” of the cutting edge contemporary dance world, will present stunning performances of ferociously inventive works. Well
WHITE WAVE

over 350 performers from the New York City area and beyond will perform innovative contemporary dance, from passionate drama to gut-splitting humor in this extraordinary dance arts event. The grand scale of the festival, the diverse artist participation, and vast interdisciplinary variety distinguishes the event among its peers.

The 2006 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL situates itself as an integral part of the broader d.u.m.b.o. art under the bridge festival, produced by the d.u.m.b.o. arts center (dac). Both indoor and outdoor artwork and performances will take place throughout the weekend of this not-to-be-missed celebration.  This year's d.u.m.b.o. art under the bridge festival is anticipated to be the largest, most comprehensive gathering to date. For three days, over 250,000 people are expected to attend New York’s liveliest fine arts festival, held in the streets, along the Brooklyn waterfront and in the myriad galleries, studios and performance spaces in the DUMBO area. Approximately 1,500 established and emerging artists participate in this year's event, spanning for 30 blocks between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges - making it the nation's largest free contemporary visual arts festival. Art happens everywhere - on walls, streets and river, in parks, lobbies and galleries. Mixed media installations, nighttime projections, performances and exhibitions take place as artists work within and around the unique spaces of this historic, once-industrial neighborhood.

All other performances are FREE, although donations are encouraged. Performance times are noted below. Tickets for festival performances are available at the door only; no reservations will be taken.  Performances are held at WHITE WAVE's John Ryan Theater located at 25 Jay Street (accessible from the F train at York Street Station) in DUMBO, Brooklyn, unless otherwise noted. Hosting over 25,000 audience members in the past five years, the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL has garnered repeat attention from The New York Times, Daily News, The Village Voice and Dance Magazine.  Attracting standing-room-only crowds, the public’s response to this annual festival continues to exceed our expectations. These supporters and media features have further raised the profile of WHITE WAVE in the performing arts community, and have increased the general public’s awareness of what is new and fresh in expressive movement.

As WHITE WAVE has grown, so has the buzz surrounding us, leading to rave reviews in both local and international media citing our festivals and performance space as “the hottest spot in DUMBO.”

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Brooklyn Borough President’s Office, and City Council, David Yassky as well as Mertz Gilmore Foundation, Emma A Sheafer Charitable Trust, Samsung Electronics America, INC, The Korea Society, Korean Cultural Service, and the support of individual donors.

The installation of WHITE WAVE’s new, fully equipped state-of-the-art lighting system is funded by a generous grant from the Mertz Gilmore Foundation.
